Mar has achieved amazing things in snow sports as a skier, and we were lucky enough to be able to interview her and find out more about the challenges she has faced.
Nice to meet you Mar, I've heard lots about your snow sports achievements in assembly! Who's your role model and why?
My role model is probably an Olympic skier called Ted Ligety because he always tries his hardest and at first he didn’t do very well but he didn’t give up and has now won a few World Cups and Olympics.
How did you get started in snow sports?
I started skiing as a hobby when I was 8, I then decided to join a ski racing team in Madrid, Spain which is where I used to live.
What's an event that's shaped you?
Last year in the SSA (Ski Snowboard Australia) National Championships, I dislocated my knee half way through the race but proceeded to finish the race, not giving up before I reached the end.
Wow an injury like that must've been challenging to cope with...
Yeah I'd say my knee injury would be the biggest challenge I've faced. I’ve had physiotherapy sessions every week for nearly 3 years. It still challenges me in some day to day activities.
That amount of perseverance is inspirational - what motivates you to keep going?
My ongoing knee injury and surgery is really what keeps me motivated to improve myself.
Right! What do you currently prioritize between academics, sports, leadership as Sports Captain, social life, sleep, etc?
Well you don’t get much sleep when you are down at the snow training as you have late nights and early mornings. Some weeks throughout the term are more difficult than others, due to assessments and exams. Skiing makes it a bit harder as you don’t get the weekends to work on them.
In the future, where do you see yourself and your snow sports pursuits?
I would like to continue ski racing for a few more years, after that I would like to focus a bit more in my studies, but I will definitely keep it as a hobby.
Do you have any advice you'd give your younger self (or any younger girls reading this right now)?
Never give up, haha I know its cliche but that would be my advice. No matter what comes your way, make sure it doesn’t stop you from achieving your goal.
That's awesome, thanks for chatting.
You're welcome :)
